Year 11 Geographers – GCSE River Study - 15 & 16 Sept

n Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th September, 40 of our Year 11 Geography pupils headed to the beautiful Trough of Bowland to complete their GCSE river fieldwork investigation. The weather was certainly determined to keep us on our toes, with pupils and staff spending the days dodging showers between spells of dry weather, but fortunately the rain did little to dampen spirits.
The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that the cross-section of the River Wyre changes over distance. Pupils visited three different sites as they travelled towards Abbeystead, carefully measuring the collecting samples from each site to compare changes along the river's course.
A particular highlight of the trip was measuring river velocity using dog biscuits. This tested pupils' throwing and catching abilities to the limit as they timed the biscuits travelling downstream. Despite the occasional shower, the experiment proved a great success and provided plenty of entertainment along the way.
Most importantly, the trip was a tremendous success thanks to the excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and willingness of our pupils to get involved in every aspect of the fieldwork. The data collected will now form an important part of their GCSE Geography studies.
