Strong Foundations
At Broughton High School, we believe that strong foundations in reading, writing, language and communication and numeracy are essential for success in school and beyond. Through a consistent whole-school approach, we ensure that every pupil develops the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become effective readers, writers, communicators and mathematicians.

Reading
As a Reading School, we value reading as both a source of enjoyment and an essential life skill. Pupils develop fluency, confidence and understanding across every subject through high-quality teaching and ambitious texts. Our inclusive approach ensures that all pupils can access the curriculum, develop rich vocabulary and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Writing
Writing is developed across every subject so that pupils can communicate clearly, accurately and purposefully. We have high expectations for presentation, spelling, punctuation and grammar while encouraging pupils to write with increasing independence and stamina. Pupils learn to write as historians, scientists, geographers and artists, using the language and conventions of each subject.

Language and Communication
We believe that every pupil should develop the language and communication skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. Through purposeful talk, active listening and collaborative discussion, pupils learn to articulate ideas, think critically and communicate with confidence. These skills are developed across every subject and give pupils the confidence and cultural capital to succeed academically and in the wider world.

Numeracy
We believe that every pupil should develop the confidence, fluency and understanding needed to use mathematics successfully in school and beyond. Numeracy is everyone's responsibility and is developed across every subject through opportunities to work with numbers, interpret data, reason and solve problems in meaningful contexts. By applying mathematical thinking across the curriculum, pupils gain the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed decisions and thrive in further education, employment and everyday life.

Together, these strong foundations ensure that every pupil leaves Broughton High School equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve success and make a positive contribution to the world around them.
