Our school flag has reached Antarctica!
We are thrilled to share some truly incredible news - our school flag designed by Phoebe Knight in 7R has officially made it all the way to Rothera Research Station in Antarctica.
The flag was proudly carried by three glaciologists: Sian Thorpe, Andrew Hoffman and Rohi, who took it with them during their scientific work on the Antarctic Peninsula. They even captured fantastic photographs of the flag both at Rothera Research Station and aboard a Twin Otter aircraft, the small research plane that transports scientists to their remote field sites.
As glaciologists, Sian, Andrew and Rohi study glaciers - how they form, how they move, and how they change over time. During this expedition, they were investigating how meltwater affects the movement of glacial ice. When extra water collects underneath a glacier, it can make the ice more slippery, sometimes causing the glacier to speed up. Understanding these changes helps scientists learn more about our planet’s climate and the future of Earth’s ice.
This is an amazing achievement, and we are so proud that our school flag has travelled to one of the most remote places on Earth.
