Chess Competition 2025
This year, 18 pupils from different year groups took part in the Broughton chess competition. To keep all pupils in the competition longer, we decided that there would be a second plate competition for all those knocked out in the first round. In the main competition, there were some close early rounds and four pupils made it to the semi-finals in which Sam Newell 10N beat Zac Tymon 7R and Muxuan Chen 7C saw off the challenge from Noah Mayers-Smith 8S. The final between Sam and Muxuan was a closely fought contest, before Muxuan finally managed to take control of the board and was able to check mate Sam, to win the competition. In the semi-finals of the plate competition, Uzair Akhtar 8C beat Isaac O’Reilly 8H and Jamie Steele 10C conquered Luke Morris 10S. The final of the plate competition firstly saw a drawn game and had to be replayed. In the rematch, Jamie gained victory in a very even and closely fought contest, with Uzair losing by the narrowest of margins. Well done to all the pupils who took part.
