Broughton High School

Achieving Together

Music

Music at Broughton is fun, challenging, and inspiring. For many pupils, it is a new subject after Primary School, and our aim is to make it exciting, creative, and accessible for all. From the start of Year 7, pupils are immersed in a practical and inclusive curriculum that helps them develop musical confidence, creativity, and a broad understanding of different styles and traditions.

Pupils learn through singing, instrumental performance, composition, and critical listening. They explore music from classical, pop, film, electronic, and global traditions, using both live instruments and music technology. As they progress, pupils develop their skills in notation, ensemble playing, music production, and creative composition. They are encouraged to be imaginative, reflective, and collaborative in their approach to music-making.

We offer all pupils the opportunity to learn a musical instrument or receive singing lessons. Around 80 lessons take place each week with our team of peripatetic teachers, and pupils are supported in working towards ABRSM and Rock School exams.

Extra-curricular music is a vibrant part of school life. Pupils participate in a range of ensembles including our jazz band, orchestra and choir. Broughton ensembles perform regularly at concerts, community events, and international tours, including our recent trip to Lake Garda in Summer 2025.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning in Music

Our curriculum is built around six key strands: Singing, Playing, Composing, Improvising, Critical Engagement, and SMSC. Lessons are designed to challenge pupils of all abilities, with a strong focus on creativity, performance, and developing a deep understanding of how music works.

Through structured projects, pupils learn to perform confidently, compose with purpose, and listen with insight. They use music technology to enhance their creativity and explore modern approaches to making music. By developing musical skills and vocabulary, pupils grow as confident musicians who can apply their learning both within and beyond the classroom.
