The Physical Education department aims to provide a safe atmosphere in which all students can enjoy and achieve in sport. We also aim to challenge all students to follow a healthy active lifestyle both in and out of the school environment, with the department boasting an exceptional range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for students.
The school actively encourages students’ involvement in extra-curricular clubs. As a result, sports clubs are very well-attended and teams enjoy success in local District, County and National competitions.
At Broughton we are extremely proud of our 'state of the art' facilities that offer all our students access to the very best teaching and learning resources. Teaching and learning and student progress is a top priority in all lessons and we aim to challenge students to reach aspirational targets. Academic rigour and high expectations for all students underpin all decisions and approaches within the department.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning in PE
All students are encouraged to work independently in a variety of contexts including team and individual sports and fitness based activities. Each activity offers challenges that encourage individual, peer, team and whole class participation whilst also providing opportunities to develop umpiring and leadership skill in a safe learning environment.
Students enjoy practical lessons that encourage participation in competition and develop a confidence to try new skills. GCSE theory lesson engage students in a variety of practical activities. As a result of excellent teaching exam results are exceptionally high in PE and well above National Averages.

In PE students study for 2 hours/week in Key Stage 3, 2 hours/week in Year 10 and 1 hour/week in Year 11 core PE. Students opting to follow a GCSE in the subject are provided with the opportunity to study for 4/5 hours/week in Years 10 and 11 GCSE PE..
Throughout Key Stage 3, students are assessed on their practical performance in sport at the end of each unit of work, the criteria for assessment has been adapted to remain in line with the new GCSE assessment criteria for Practical Performance (C3).
PE is taught in single gender lessons throughout KS3 with students being ability grouped upon entry in Year 7 and throughout the Key Stage.
