Music

Music at Broughton is fun, challenging and motivating. For many pupils, Music is a new subject to them after leaving Primary School. In the department we have two teaching rooms and two practice rooms. We have a music studio which is equipped with keyboards, computers and the latest music software.

We offer every pupil the chance to learn a musical instrument or have singing lessons. The department has five peripatetic teachers who deliver approximately 120 lessons a week. Pupils are encouraged to take music exams with The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, which are held at the end of every term.

Extra-curricular music is very popular and many pupils continue with this when they leave Broughton. There are approximately 55 pupils in the choir and 35 in the Concert band as well as many smaller singing and instrumental ensembles. The department holds three concerts a year in school and takes part in many charity fund raising events in the community.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning in Music

All pupils are encouraged to develop their musical skills. Each module is designed to challenge students of all different abilities and starting points. Individual and group performing are equal in helping to develop a pupil’s coordination and kinetic skills. Flair and imagination developed in composition and confidence with performing, help pupils to succeed in all other subject areas.

Pupils are asked to evaluate pieces of music and be able to present a clear picture of how the music has been composed using all the different devices, structures and elements. This gives them the opportunity to be both critical and constructive about a piece of music.
