Mathematics is taught by specialist teachers and classrooms are located in one area of the school. The mathematics department at Broughton is regarded as one of the most successful mathematics departments in Lancashire. We also rate very highly in National figures and GCSE results have been outstanding year on year. Pupils enjoy learning in the department and accept the challenges set by teachers who have high expectations of each and every student.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning in Mathematics
Pupils use mini-whiteboards consistently in mathematics lessons so that teachers can gage understanding and adjust lessons accordingly. Paired-work gives the opportunity for pupils to discuss mathematics in their lessons.
As well as Declarative (‘I know that’) and Procedural (‘I know how’) knowledge, pupils are taught about Conditional knowledge (‘I know when’). This gives pupils the ability to reason and solve problems with pupils knowing which is the best strategy to employ when addressing a problem.
Pupils are set weekly homework tasks to complete. Classes get a mixture of written and online tasks each week for their homework. Online tasks are set on the award winning Sparx Maths, Hegarty Maths, and Dr Frost Maths platforms. Sparx Maths provides personalised intelligent practice for each pupil and is proven to boost grades.
Our more able pupils are entered for competitions, for example, the UKMT Challenge which is organised by Leeds University, the Runshaw Maths Challenge, and the LUSOM Maths Competitions at both KS3 and KS4.
