CPSHE (Citizenship, Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education)

CPSHE education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Evidence shows that well-delivered CPSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.’ PSHE Association 2019

The school’s vision and educational aims for CPSHE are to provide a coherent programme of personal, health, social, citizenship and careers education. This is in line with the school’s aim to encourage high aspirations so as to maximise progress and to enable all pupils to experience the joy of success. Our aims for CPSHE also reflect the CPSHE Association syllabus which is to equip pupils to live healthy, safe productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives through core themes of health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning in CPSHE (Citizenship, Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education)

CPSHE lessons encourage every pupil to participate fully reflect on their own opinions and views. The schemes of work have been structured in order to facilitate our aims in reaching the whole child. Each unit incorporates a range of tasks and variety of learning styles. Pupils cover all aspects of CPSHE through written work, research tasks and discussions. Engaging, inclusive approaches are used in all lessons to enable pupils to enjoy and achieve in CPSHE.

Teachers are very passionate about CPSHE and this enthusiasm enhances the interest of our pupils. In Year 7, CPSHE is delivered for one full week per term (6 one hour lessons) within Humanities. In Year 8 and Year 9, CPSHE is delivered as a discrete timetabled lesson of one hour per week for half the academic year; all lessons in Year 8 and Year 9 are delivered by the Head of CPSHE, ensuring consistency and quality. Again in Year 10 and Year 11, pupils are timetabled one lesson per week for half the academic year; these lessons are delivered by a small team of teachers which are led by the Head of CPSHE who teaches both year groups.
